Selective Filtering
Selective filtering, such as used in this image, can alter contrast or enable the placement of object values along a scale of tonalities. For example, dust lanes can be made to stand out as if spot lighted and the depth of space rendered as a star spangled three dimensional region that recedes into infinity. In short, astrophotographers have the means to control their medium with the same finesse that painters command with a palette and brush. For this reason, different pictures of an identical subject can acquire distinctive appearances and conjure unexpected reactions from the viewer. Thus, astronomical images can represent a individual opinion with its own sense of reality that expresses the photographer's personal delight and wonderment.
This image was obtained under Bortle 5-6 skies.
